Lucky Baskhar (2024)
Story: Set in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the narrative follows Bashar Kumar (Dulquer Salmaan), a middle-class bank cashier from Bombay. He lives with his younger brother, sister, father, wife Sumathi (Meenakshi Chaudhary) and son Kartik (Hrithik). Despite his desire to give a better life for his family, he is plagued by financial problems and growing debt. To make matters worse, his dedication and honesty are not rewarded as he is overlooked for promotions at the bank. Cornered, the sculptor makes a life-changing decision, bending the rules in search of a brighter future. What does the sculptor do and what consequences await him?
Dulquer Salmaan, who transforms into Baskhan, delivers a performance that is simple, balanced, and deeply effective. He breathes life into the role, making the sculptor relevant and approachable, drawing the audience on his journey through an authentic portrayal. Meenakshi Chaudhary, who was earlier seen in a limited role in Guntur Karam, is seen in a more notable role here and she shines as a devoted wife and mother Sumati. Her portrayal adds depth to the film's emotional landscape. The supporting casts, which include seasoned actors like Ramki, Sachin Khedekar, P Sai Kumar, Tinu Anand and Raghu Babu, as well as young actors like Hrithik, Manasa Choudhary, Hyper Adi, Srinath Maganti, and Surya Srinivas, give powerful performances that effectively support the main narrative.
Atlury's gripping screenplay is complemented by a production team that completely recreates the contrasting atmosphere of the era. Cinematographer Nimish Ravi and art director Banglan beautifully capture the charm of a bygone era, creating a unique cinematic experience with warm tunes and film crops. The film's dialogues are well crafted, providing impact whenever needed, and adding to the film's immersive storytelling. The songs may lack recall value after leaving cinema, but GV Prakash Kumar's background score significantly enhances the narrative. Editor Naveen Nuli keeps the narrative tight and engaging, though a few scenes could benefit from a solid pace, especially in the second half.
If one nitpicks, then a few moments — like an attempt at humor at a checkpoint crossing scene — don't quite match the film's otherwise high quality, briefly disrupting the flow.
Lucky Baskhar emerges as an impressive period crime thriller, blending a nostalgic backdrop with a story of human ambition and resilience. The film directed by Venky Atluri combines the meticulous portrayal of Dulquer Salmaan as Baskhar and a strong supporting cast to create an engaging cinematic experience.
