Review: Bhool Bhulaiyaa is a psychological horror comedy movie directed by Priyadarshan and stars Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Shiney Ahuja, Ameesha Patel, Paresh Rawal, Manoj Joshi, Rajpal Yadav, Ashrani, Vikram Gokhale and the late Rasika Joshi, along with Tarina Patel. Vineet and Jimit Trivedi.
I have watched this movie many times and never got bored and may watch it many more times, the movie was released in 2007 and I am watching it again in 2021 and this movie still feels fresh. Great acting, engaging screenplay, mesmerizing music and above all great humor amidst the horror make this movie a perfect horror comedy movie.
This is a type of movie that is seriously lacking in Bollywood and this is the main reason why cinema has now attained cult status. This movie is undoubtedly a landmark movie in Indian cinema whenever we talk about horror comedy movies.
The acting is really strong and it is Akshay Kumar's charm that will mesmerize you with his charismatic acting, remember he comes in about an hour after the movie starts and as soon as he comes on screen he hijacks the whole atmosphere, I remember watching the movie in the movie theater and the audience literally applauded Akshay Kumar's entry by whistling and clapping, it wouldn't be a shocking scene in a small town cinema hall but it was a shocking and exciting one for me in a multiplex in a big city. Vidya Balan was amazing in her role and I think no one could have done the role better than her. Be it all the other characters be it Ameesha Patel, Shiney Ahuja, Paresh Rawal, Manoj Joshi, Ashrani and Rajpal Yadav, they are all multi talented and have played their roles perfectly.
The screenplay of the movie deserves special praise and mention as the screenplay is so perfectly woven that it does not give a small hint till the end of the movie who is Manjulika and it gives a shock to almost all the viewers. The director and the screenwriter were successful in feeding the minds of the audience with a lot of speculations till the climax is revealed. The climax of the movie is great and gives a perfect and happy ending to the movie.
The music and background music were mesmerizing, the background score of the movie was great in creating the mysterious atmosphere. The songs of the movie were also great 'Hare Krishna Hare Ram' was a chart buster and is still famous.
There may have been a few horror comedies before Bhool Bhulaiyaa and there were several good horror comedy movies after Bhool Bhulaiyaa like Go Goa Gone and Stree which are good horror comedies but the status or level that Bhool Bhulaiyaa has achieved cannot be surpassed by any other movie. Easily a must watch flick.
