The story is both heartbreaking and touching, as it tackles many issues such as bullying, social anxiety, depression and suicide. Many of the characters deal with some or all of these issues. The problems the characters deal with in the past ultimately lead them to become who they are in the current movie.
A silent voice has many letters, some brighter than others. Showa is a great protagonist who (unlike most movies) is struggling with something much bigger in his life, his past self. The other main character Shoko is outstanding. You can really feel all of his emotions just through his facial animations. Other notable characters that I enjoyed were Shoa's best friend Tomohiro (who brings a nice comedic presence to the film) and Shoko's younger sister Yuzuru. My only problem with Silent Voice is with a few side characters who show up once and a while, but don't really contribute much to the film - though that's just a minor nitpick.
Most of the music is played only by the piano in a muted voice giving the film a more mellow tone. It makes many scenes feel more peaceful and calm which contrasts with what many of the characters feel deep inside. The song titled "Lit" is a beautiful piano piece that I believe will make anyone emotional when listening to it. So I enjoyed quite a few songs in a silent voice that really stood out.
The animation of this movie is absolutely gorgeous. There's a fireworks scene that's beautiful, it's definitely the animation highlight of this film...it's breathtaking.
